I’m from Montana and tied professionally a million years ago when I was in high school. My pick Royal Wulff, Royal Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis, and any hopper pattern for dry flies. For wets, all you really need is an Emergent Sparkle Pupa. Nymphs: Hare’s Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail, and all three in bead head (I get extras here because I was short on the wets). Streamers: Wooly Bugger, Muddler Minnow, Muddler Marabou White and Black.
The most fun I’ve had is dragging a Yellow Marabou Muddler across the top of really high muddy water. The browns would come right of the bottom and smash it like you’ve never seen. Some would come two feet out of the water after it.
size 2,4,6 and 8 muddler. best one fly ever made. fish it on top or as a streamer. absolutely irresistible. oh, yeah. that’s another one. the lrresistible.
dries: pmd’s, bwo’s, elk hair caddis a hopper or stimulator.
nymphs: pheasant tail, hairs ear, BIG stoneflys, one of several of my deluxe midge patterns…
streamers: wooly buggers, double bunnies, I make a great olive white with pinkish flashabou that looks like a little rainbow…, clouser minnow, lefty’s deceiver. there are any number of streamers that work depending on where and what you’re fishing for.
give me specific places and I could narrow the choices or give you an idea of what and how to fish it.
The black ant is one of my favorite flies. It works when everything else is being padded up.
Woolbuggers are great flies. I like green and black.
mosquitoes are found at most lakes and streams. It’s a good fly.
last but not least is a caddis in both adult and imerger.
