@gs550caferacer It’s easy. You just need the TIME…. I spent six months doing it and caught a lot of beautiful fish. If you’re a trout fisherman, you will not have any trouble finding fish in NZ. Just get a decent map of both islands and head upstream along any river that turns your head. You’ll be amazed at what you find, even in places that don’t look that hot.

Its a pity that the brown trout numbers have halfed in the last 10 years in the south island east coast rivers due to water extraction from intensified dairying.
Also, a lot of the upland spawning streams are being periodically silted up due to lack of control in forestry. Intensive farming has wiped out NZ flyfishing – better to spend your money in Argentina.
How easy is it for an average fly fisherman like myself to come to New Zealand rent a vehicle and fish without having a guide??
