One of the most economical ways for a beginner to learn about the sport of fly fishing is through books. Reading many fly fishing books could become quite time consuming, but it could easily be less time consuming and less expensive than taking lessons from an actual professional instructor.

There are approximately 5,000 books devoted to the sport listed on just Amazon alone. A Beginner should look for books that focus on all aspects of this sport. There are many things one needs to consider and if possible do some research on before diving into this sport. The Fly fishing book you purchase(or borrow from the local library) should include topics such as; purchasing the right equipment, how the equipment works, the best techniques to start out with and, spotting areas with high potential for fish.

One of the most important topics the book should cover is purchasing the equipment that is right for you. It should cover both freshwater and saltwater fishing if that is what you intend to do. Different rods and reels can be used in either situation. The book should cover topics like the 3 main types of fly reels and the advantages/disadvantages of each. The different materials used to make the rods such as; graphite, bamboo, or fiberglass. Lastly the book should have information on the best situations to use which type of fly.

Once you understand the basics, own the equipment, and have practiced some of the different techniques it is time to find places nearby to do some fishing. While you can try your luck at a local river or body of water, information on the best location can be found in fly fishing books. At this point another great resource for those just getting started can be your local fishing supply store. Not all, but many stores have people that actually fish working behind the counter that can tell you about some of the local hot spots for fishing.

If you would like to find out more information on fly fishing books or read some of my personal book reviews please follow the link at the bottom of the page

By: Bob Serra

The fly in fly fishing plays an imperative role. Fly fishing is considered to be one of the several ways for capturing a fish, especially salmon, trout and other kinds of oceanic species including tarpon, striped bass and bonefish. Fly fishing is gradually gaining popularity among all fishing enthusiasts and there are constant interests of capturing, as many varied kinds of fish are feasible through this method.

The method of fly fishing originated from a prehistoric fishing form known as angling and because of this reason the sport name has been called angling. It has its own uniqueness and the perceptible instrument for this method of fishing is the utilization of synthetic flies or the fly baits. Typically, synthetic flies are attached with thread, fur or feathers. However there are some other options as well such as beads or tinsel. For additional weight lead is utilized.

Significance about the Fly in Fly Fishing:

The main reason for the using of artificial flies in fly fishing is pulling out of the specific species. By utilizing an appropriate combination of flies, which comprises the weight, color and size, to the rod, reel and line, the probabilities of capturing a wanted species is increases. Size and color of the flies is cited due to the fact that it adds to the fly’s concealment effect, which is intended to mimic local bugs.

Typically, the size of the flies ranges from large to small. The line where the fly is swiped also plays a vital role with the fly, as it mostly helps to cast the fly. Often, it depends upon the intention of a fisherman. The heavy lines are applied for reasons of sinking and the light ones are applied to make the fly remain floating on the surface of the water. Actually, the fact is that a fly line may manifestly be cast exclusive of a fly making it unique from the fundamental fishing reel and rod method.

Some of the popular fly kinds are the dragonflies and damselflies. These are very larger and are typically hit or overlook. If a trout wishes to have this fly, it will hit it brutally. Several bugs are also mimicked and this pattern is called terrestrials. These bugs include ants, crickets, beetles and grasshoppers. Terrestrial bugs are often used to fish adjacent to grassy reservoirs. For better results, often fishermen use this kind of terrestrial flies in fly fishing.

By: Leonard Clark Jr

About the Author:

It is important to understand the fly fishing basics before buying fly fishing gear. Some of the most seasoned anglers in the world have found that making the transition from spin casting and bait casting to fly fishing with flies an intimidating endeavor. I have been spin and bait casting for over forty years and three years ago tried my hand at fly fishing. Speaking from my own experience it definitely presents some new challenges because fly casting a different skill than spin or bait casting.

So if you never fished before from this prospective being a beginner is a good thing but, before heading to the store and spending a lot of money on equipment and tackle, you should understand a few of the fly fishing basics that will influence your purchasing decision. Regardless of your fishing experience, remember that when fly fishing, you will cast the line instead of the lure so there is a difference in the casting technique that you may be used to.

Fly fishing rods are longer and more flexible than spinning rods. Fly rods are also available in different lengths and with three basic types of flexibility. Most learning the fly fishing basics will be better served with a med weight (5 -6 weight) fly rod, fly line of the same weight and fly reel. A lot of fly shops and sporting goods stores offer beginner packages with everything you need to get started. At a minimum, look for a package that has fly rod, reel, weight forward floating line and leader.

If you are not positive you will enjoy this sport see if you can find someone who will give you a fly fishing lesson and provide the equipment. If cost is an issue you might want to look for some used equipment and use it to learn the fly fishing basics such as casting and choosing the right flies for the right season in the right area of the country.

Learning Basic Fly Selection

To start with there are basically two types of flies’ anglers can choose from, wet flies and dry flies. Dry flies float on the surface and the fish come to the surface to take the fly. Wet flies on the other hand are heavy and meant to sink in the water to attract fish looking for food in the water or near the bottom. Learning the fly fishing basics on how to hook a fish will be better using surface flies as you can see the fish leaping at the fly and react accordingly.

You will find many tutorials about insects that live in the water and their life cycles. This basic information will help when select the correct fly for the season. Of the fly fishing basics, learning how to select the right fly for the season will help you catch more fish.

By: Bob Cummins

About the Author:

With fly fishing it’s a whole new world of fishing things you need to know. There are several pieces of equipment used in fly fishing. This article will discuss one of its most fundamental equipments which is the fly rod. This is where the fly line is attached.

The fly rod comes in several sizes. Its length typically ranges from as short as 6 ft to as long as 13 ft. Aside from the length, fly fishing rods are measured by their weight. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the value of the weight, the smaller the fish it can catch. For example, a fly rod of 0wt (zero weight) is enough to catch a small trout. For bigger types of fish such as a salmon, a fly rod of a heavier weight is used.

A fly rods weight is also important in determining the weight of the fly line that can be used with it. So a rod of 10wt requires a #10 line and could not use a line of a different size. There are rods which can accommodate a variety of weights but they tend to compromise performance for flexibility.

Bamboo is the traditional material used as a fly rod. It is prized by fly fishing enthusiasts for its surprising strength in typical conditions. It can be pricey though, which is why others choose rods made of alternative materials such as fiberglass and graphite. The two are chosen for their durability (they are not prone to rusting) and performance (they are lighter compared to other materials).

By: Larry H Dennis

About the Author:

I love fishing and hope anyone who reads my article will enjoy it. I started fishing when I was about nine years old. I was given my first fishing pole at that time from my grandfather. It was a beautiful split bamboo fly rod that had been hand wrapped by my grandfather. He taught me the art of fishing in the rivers of southern Utah. He taught me the basics first and then taught me how to fly fish. each time he took me I couldn’t wait for him to take me again. We grew very close as we went fishing time after time. I grew up with him patiently teaching me through the years. Those were the good old days. He’s gone now and I know if there are rivers in heaven with trout in them he’ll be fishing them . Funny how time fly’s by. I’m a grandfather now and I go fishing with my grandchildren now. Now I see the joy he got from teaching me how to fish.
