Fly fishing is a form of angling technique in which an artificial ‘fly’ is used to lure different kinds of fish. The fly is made from either natural materials like hair and fur, or with synthetic materials like mylar and rubber, or a combination of both. Since the artificial fly is almost weightless, a specialized weighted line is used to cast the fly.

Anglers use fly fishing to catch both freshwater as well as saltwater fish. Each type of water body requires a unique technique for fly fishing. The habitat of the fish (like lake, pond, river, bay or the ocean), usually determines the exact fly fishing technique to be used.

Fly fishing lines these days are most often coated with plastic to make them heavy enough to propel the fly into the air towards the target. As opposed to bait or spin fishing in which the weight of the sinker or lure is what provides the casting distance, it is the weight of the fly line which carries the artificial fly to the target in fly fishing. Casting a weightless lure therefore requires a different technique from other kinds of casting.

Flies are designed to either imitate real-life bait, or to be very attractive while not really mimicking any real-life creature. Artificial flies have been used as far back as 200 AD in Macedonia. Back in the old days, flies were made to resemble aquatic insects and bait fish. These days, with the availability of a wide variety of synthetic materials in different textures and colors, flies are made to resemble all kinds of saltwater and freshwater prey. These could include terrestrial and aquatic insects, worms, crustaceans, small reptiles, amphibians, and even birds and mammals. Flies that resemble vegetation or chunks of flesh are also used to attract fish.

Flies that float on the water surface are known as dry flies. Those that are partially submerged are called ‘emergers’. Those that sink below the surface of the water are known as streamers, nymphs, and wet flies. Artificial flies can range in size from a few fractions of an inch to a foot. However, most flies are within half an inch to about two inches in length.

Trout and salmon are the most popular species of fish caught using fly fishing methods. But a wide variety of other fish like grayling, pike, panfish, bass, carp, redfish, tarpon, snook, bonefish and striped bass can also be caught using this technique.

By: Ken R Robak
With the recent advancements of technology, stronger reels and rods have been developed, thus allowing for larger fish to be caught such as tuna, marlin and even some sharks.

In order to make the most of your experience, there are a number of tools, equipment, items of clothing and accessories you will need. A quality Fishing vest has plenty of pockets and is made is breathable material that wicks away moisture, yet is comfortable and practical. Waders are perfect for those excursions in the water and protect your clothing. You will need a select number of knives, as each one will serve a different purpose and each is specially made for certain species of fish.

Of course, you can’t go Fishing without your lines, reels and flies! There are many different styles and brands to choose from. If you’re not sure which style is best for you, do some research on the internet to get an idea of what you need and what would work best. There are many consumer reviews on various products that you can read in order to make a more informed decision.

The various fly fishing equipment can be overwhelming at first, especially if you are new to the sport. Thanks to the internet, making informed decisions are easy. With just a few clicks of your mouse, you can order everything you need and have it delivered right to your door.

Salmon fishing is a hobby that is impossible not to love, especially if you are a lover of the great outdoors. It is fun, it is exciting, it is cheap and not so many hobbies bring you closer to nature the way salmon fishing does. The list of reasons why you should try salmon fishing is a very long one and the rewards and benefits are endless.

If you are just beginning to do it, there are a few important things you need to know in order that you start out on a good foot. Remember the following tips to save you from mistakes and inconveniences along the way.

1) Before heading out to fish, make sure that you are very well-prepared. If it’s your first time fishing for salmon, it’s advisable that you take someone who has experience with you. You may have extensive fishing experience yourself but salmons are a different thing. To be able to catch them, you need other skills and knowledge besides what you already learned from catching other kinds of fish. Furthermore, salmons are composed of different species as well, so the way to catch certain species varies with the ways of catching the other species. So it’s best that you educate yourself about these details before you even plan a fishing trip.

2) Always check if you have the equipment appropriate for salmon fishing. It’s doesn’t suffice that you have fishing poles, baits, lures and fishing lines. You need to be able to determine if the equipment and gear you have are suitable and can be used to catch a salmon.

3) Use sharp hooks. This is one thing you should never forget. The sharper your hooks are, the easier they pierce through salmon jaws and the more effective they are in keeping the fish stuck. And of course, if the hook’s sharp, it’s a lot more difficult for a salmon to struggle or get away. Use a blunt hook and you will end up catching few, if you even catch anything at all.

These are the most basic salmon fishing tips when it comes to salmon fishing. Remember them always and your fishing trips will more likely end up not only filled with fun but with fish as well.

By: Sean A Moronse
