With the increasing offer of fly fishing gear a person that wants to begin fly fishing can be overwhelmed. How a person that just starts to fly fish can do his or her first steps and buy only the needed fly fishing equipment. I’ll try to assist you to stay focused and to keep you on a budget that will not cost you your arm and leg.

Let’s walk through the essential fly fishing gear in order to make your fly fishing experience a positive one.

Fly fishing flies – Well, this is where this section of fishing got its name from. Without flies it is just not fly fishing but more important is that without the suitable flies, you probably will not catch anything at all. There are number of parameters that determine what fly to use like the type of fish in your fishing area, is it a lake or there is a current etc.

Fly fishing rod – The rod is kind of basic and elementary piece of equipment in fly fishing and there are many different types of rods. Most rods differ one from another by material, number of pieces, weight, length, rod action and price. Make sure to understand all these fly fishing rod features before buying one.

Fly fishing reel – Looks like it has a simple role and its true but make no mistakes, you must have good quality reel because the fly fishing reel real value is when you catch a fish and the reel is under stress, then a poor quality reel might cost you by losing the fish and even damage your equipment.

Fly fishing line – The fly line is what enables an angler to cast the fly and once again it is important to have the right type of fly fishing line. Fly line features to pay attention to are the fly line density, fly line weight (must match your rod and reel), the color of the line and match it to the type of fish you expect to be fishing.

Fly fishing vest – This is something that will make your fishing experience much easier and organized. The fly fishing vest helps you to make sure that you will not lose any item and to keep all required fishing items in a reach of a hand. Just make sure to pick one that you feel comfortable with and that is not too heavy for you.

Wading boots – I know, it seems not so relevant but let me tell you this, while fishing, you will move on wet and slippery rocks and wading boots are designed to hold on wet surface which will prevent you to twist your ankle, break a leg etc.

Generally, There is more fly fishing equipment that will make your experience of fly fishing smoother and enjoyable and the mentioned above are just a good necessary start.

By: Assaf Katzir

About the Author:

The fly fishing is a kind of an outdoor activity, which initially aims to catch as much fish as possible. The term itself suggest how it is done, the word fly implies the throwing of bait and hook into the water, where as the bait and the hook would give the picture of flying while making its way into the open water.

Going back, man used this kind of fishing to provide him fish like bass, pike, carp and other fish that live in the oceans to sustain the need of food. But nowadays, man uses fly fishing not only to provide meal, but as well as a business. This kind of fishing is intended to catch bass, pike, carp and other fish that is in demand in the market.

The use of fishing tackles are requires in this kind of fishing. None the less, if you intend to be more specific, in the course of catching a target fish, there are lots of variations in equipments that can be used. Generally speaking, the common equipments used in this kind of fishing is more commonly phrased as fly tackle by most fishermen.

This consists of artificial flies, the fly rod which throws the flies and the fly line. In order to be able to throw the fly as far as possible the line needs to be a bit heavier than other types of lines. Although, most items comes in different options in the need to use.

Artificial lures that can be used in fly fishing can be made up of some materials like, hair, feathers, fur and other materials that will render the desired aspect of the insect or creature supposedly used as bait for fish. Different area as well as intended fish to be caught calls for different kind of baits. Particular fly should fit in specific locations.

Flies can either be attractive and imitative. There are certain distinctive in two, the attractive ones are more on colors, shapes and reflections that may attract the fish without the need of copying the features of the prey of the fish. In contrast, the imitative, is more on imitating the prey of the fish to get its attention. But both are very useful in fly fishing.

The fly fishing, to sum it up, generally relies on the weight of the line unlike other kind of fishing that would depend on the weight of the reel to go in the deeper part of the water.

By: Jessica Bradbury

About the Author:

Fly fishing is a method that makes use of artificial flies to lure fish to the hook. It is a hobby traced back from many years ago and considered as an ancient, distinct angling method. For most anglers, to fly fish is enjoyable, relaxing and rewarding in varied ways; hence, it’s now the most exciting and fast-growing sport all over the world.

The challenge in this fishing method is to cast the fly line without making any sound and to land the bait softly; depending on what type of fish you want to catch, you either land your bait on the surface of the water or just below. Most fly fishers use flies made with feathers, bits of animal fur, thread and other materials that match the sizes and colors of those insects that most fish like to eat.

Along with the evolution of fly fishing, the technology of designing and manufacturing equipment used to fly fish has also improved. Early on, anglers used a simple rod; a pole from which fishing line could be anchored. On the other hand, modern day fly fishing now employs new materials such as plastics, carbon graphite, fiber glass or split cane on equipment. Running rings were also added to rods giving anglers a new way of controlling the fishing line — a very important aspect in fly fishing.

Among the reasons why many love fly fishing are so many beautiful surroundings to fly fish — a winding river in a forest, a blue lake on some of the world’s “big sky” country, or in a quiet stream up in the mountains. Finding the next destination for fly fishing is challenging for some and a rewarding experience for others.

If you’re new to fly fishing, you should learn the basic like choosing the right equipment. There are different rods, tackles, fly lines, reels, etc. that are available.. You should also know what type and kind of gear is appropriate for a certain fishing spot and season because the equipment used varies depending on the weather.

But knowing the right spots and equipment won’t be enough for successful fly fishing. You need to learn about the fish to help improve your catching skills. You need to know their habits, tendencies and characteristics.

By: Ross Bainbridge

About the Author:

Very little equipment is actually needed for a fly fishing expedition. Anglers usually carry more tackle than what they really need. All you really need is a rod, reel, fly line, a few leaders, spare nylon, a few flies with the usual accessories and suitable clothing.

The rod is really needed for two things: to cast the fly and to land your catch. In order to fish with a fly, and remember the fly is very light, you need a weighted line.

When you are fishing a small stream with small flies you need a delicate rod and a lighter line. Big rivers or large lakes will call for a faster action rod that allows you to cast into the wind and further away from you. The line will also be heavier. The way you use the rod, the action you get out of it, has a direct relationship with the way you present your for. For good casting the rod and line should correspond with each other. For example a number six rod and number six line go together.

The real is another important item. Each of you will comfortably hold the fly line and some 60 feet of backing.

The fly: This little item would really need a few books to do it justice as your choice would be based on the type of insect you are imitating and it is natural actions. It will also include land and water insects, small minnows just about anything your fish likes to eat. To keep it simple your choice of flies would be dry flies or wet flies.

There are always reports of fishing accidents during the fishing season. Most of these we will be flies sticky to different parts of anglers bodies – typically ears and around the face. A pair of polarized glasses will help protect your eyes and at the same time aid underwater vision. Many of these accidents will happen, not to the fisherman casting but to someone else – so always be sure there no one behind before you cast.

One final but important point. You should always wear comfortable and practical clothing. If possible it should be waterproof as you are bound to get wet at one time or another. Your clothes should allow you to blend into the scenery so avoid bright colors. A good pair of boots or waders, perhaps an anglers vest and definitely some sort of a hat.

By: Philip Robinson

About the Author:

Just as with any other sport, the equipment you use when fly fishing can be very important. There are various types of fly fishing equipment that you need when you undertake fly fishing, and be prepared because some of it can get quite expensive so look into used fly fishing equipment.!

Of course, you’ll need a rod and reel. What type of rod you choose depends on the type of fish you will be angling for. Fly rods are ranked according to their net weight capabilities (nwt). The nwt number will tell you what type of fish you will be able to catch. Fish that weigh 8 pounds will require at least an 8 nwt rod, etc. The larger the nwt number, the larger fish you can catch. Some rods are multi-rated (e.g. 7-9 nwt). These rods are good to use because they can accommodate a variety of fish, but multi-rated rods tend to be less flexible than single rated rods.

Rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, or bamboo. Fiberglass rods are durable and less expensive. Fiberglass rods are best for beginning fly fishermen because they can be used in a variety of situations. Graphite rods are lighter and will give you more fighting weight when it comes to landing a fish. Bamboo rods can be expensive, but they are extremely strong and are suited to a more laid-back casting style. so again check online for used fly fishing equipment and rods.

Your fly line will need to match the nwt of your rod. If you have an 8 nwt rod, you’ll need to use an 8 nwt line. It is acceptable to go one or two sizes above or below your rod weight (i.e. 9 nwt or 7 nwt). Buy line that is strong and durable. Some lines are specially designed for freshwater, saltwater, etc.

You will also need to have a durable net that you can carry with you. After the fish has lost its will to fight, a good net is used to scoop them out of the water. This can be a big part of your used fly fishing equipment because without a good net, you won’t be able to get your fish out of the water!

Having the right used fly fishing equipment is important for both the beginner as well as the experienced angler. As you get better and better at the sport, you will begin to see how important having good used fly fishing equipment can be. You can always upgrade, so it’s good to start out small with used fly fishing equipment and work your way up to the more expensive stuff. Your fly fishing equipment can make a world of difference between landing that big fish or catching an ordinary one.

By: Ian Botham

About the Author:
