When fly fishing, an artificial fly is utilized to catch a fish. In this type of angling method the fly is made up of a fly rod, reel and a specifically made weighted line. The weightless lure or fly needs an overall different technique to be casted as opposed to other forms of casting. Hand tied flies are used by many fly fishermen which closely resemble the natural invertebrates or food organisms which lures the fish to itself inciting it to strike.

Fly fishing is done both on salt or fresh water. In North America freshwater fishing is mainly distinguished between the cold-water species (salmon, trout, and steelhead) and the warm-water species, mainly bass. However in Britain where the natural water temperatures do not vary much the distinction is made between game fishing for salmon or trout and coarse fishing for the other species. Different techniques are employed in different habitats in this fishing style such as in small streams, Open Ocean, large rivers, lakes and ponds and bays and estuaries.

The line used in this form of fishing is mostly coated with plastic and is heavy enough in order to send the fly towards the target. Fly fishing is different from bait or spin fishing in the respect that the weight of the line carries the hook over the air in fly fishing whereas in bait or spin fishing the weight of the sinker or lure at the end of the line gives its casting distance. The artificial flies used can be of different types, some may look like insects or bait fish while others are attractors that may look like nothing in nature. These flies can sink or float and can range from a few millimeters to almost 30cm long. The flies are made by fastening feathers, hair, fur or other natural or synthetic material on a hook. The synthetic materials are now much more popular and widespread as compared to the natural materials which were earlier used. The flies are tied in patterns, sizes and colors in order to match the local aquatic and terrestrial insects or baitfish which would be attractive to the target fish species.

This kind of fishing is very much renowned for catching salmon and trout, but it is also utilized for a variety of other species as well including grayling, pike, carp, bass and panfish and also the marine species such as tarpon, redfish, striped bass, snook and bonefish. Many unintended species such as rudd, chub and beam are also caught by such fly anglers while fishing for the main species such as the trout. It is always a good idea to stay abreast of the fishing news in order to stay informed about the current updates on tournaments, boating, fishing and more.

By: David T Josh

About the Author:

Fly fishing is very popular in many countries including Britain where it is sometimes referred to as game fishing. In this type of fishing, the lure is nearly weightless and because of this, it requires a particular type of casting technique wherein the emphasis is on the line instead of the lure. Using this particular technique would require a special type fly fishing tackle wherein the line is heavier than the lure. Another important tackle would be the fishing rod. The fishing rod needs to be lightweight and flexible. Here’s some information on Greys Platinum XD Competitor Special Fly Fishing Rod.

Key Features of the Platinum XD

When it comes to serious fly fishing tackle, you could always turn to Greys, the company that offers simply the best fishing tackle in the market. The Platinum XD Competitor Special is an upgrade to the Platinum series which was very popular during 2005. If you’re already impressed by how elegantly great it looks with the matt olive finish wait till you read about its features. Extremely versatile and sleek, it is the ideal choice for different fishing situations. It was designed to deliver exquisite performance and extraordinary resilience at a more affordable price than its predecessor. This Platinum XD Competitor series is available only in 3 models: 9’6 feet with #7 rating, the 10′ feet with #7 rating and the 10′ feet with #8 rating. This makes it ideal for steelhead and salmon in medium-sized rivers or larger fish in salt water. Yes it is saltwater-proof and will not swell even if you store it wet.

More About the Platinum XD Competitor Special

The Platinum XD Competitor Special Rod is fitted with a rubber cork handle that greatly increases its strength and adaptability in all weather conditions. This is the ultimate fishing tackle for the tactical angler. The black reel seat is double anodised which makes it tougher and minimizes the occurrence of jamming. The Platinum XD is now made a bit heavier than its predecessor. The 9’6 feet weigh 159g while the 10′ feet weigh 170g it may be a bit much but it just could provide you with the edge you need in a fly fishing tackle. It is has a quick recovery tip that combines with the very thin and light blanks for smooth and tight loops. It comes with cordura zip-top tube that has an adjustable and easily removable shoulder strap for ease and comfort in portability.

Final Thoughts on the Platinum XD Competitor Special Rod

The Trout Fisherman magazine featured this fly fishing marvel in its December 2008 issue and has been called a great-all rounder, which will especially suit those anglers who like a very fast action rod with crisp presentation.

Your fly fishing tackle would never be complete without Greys Platinum XD Competitor Special Fly Fishing Rod!

By: Tommy Lee Jones

About the Author:

Fly Fishing Equipment

Fly rods

Fly fishing rods come in different sizes and with varying degrees of flexibility. It is very important that the fly fishing line used on a rod is correctly matched to the rod. If the line is too thick and heavy for a lighter rod, the casting action will be negatively affected or worse yet the rod could suffer permanent damage due to the stress. Rods are marked in sizes, from the lightest #0 or #1 to the stronger and much heavier #16 which is used predominantly for game fishing at sea.

There is a small margin of variance which can be considered when matching a line to your rod. It is usually safe to use a line rated for a rod either one size heavier or lighter than your own. In other words, if you have a 7wt fly fishing rod, it is safe to use a 6wt or 8wt line.

There is a difference between fresh water fly fishing rods and their saltwater counterparts. Saltwater rods generally need to handle stronger fish and need to cast heavier flies over longer distances; this means that the rods need to be heavier and stronger with a thicker line. Fighting **** reel seats and anti-corrosion fittings are necessary to ensure a longer life for these rods in a salty environment.

Fly fishing reels

These reels are sometimes referred to as casting reels. In fly fishing casting the line is pulled from the reel by hand as the other hand casts. The reel then comes into play when pulling the line back in with the rotation of the reel. As fly fishing has become more popular in conditions which place more demand upon the fly fisherman and his equipment, the technological enhancement of equipment has had to keep pace. These days there are specially produced reels for saltwater fly fishing and for those who are after larger fish.

Increased speeds in retrieving line as well as a reduction in friction are characteristics of newer reels. Another innovation is the use of disc drags which allow for smoother action and the use of much lighter tippets.

Fly fishing flies

Flies are extremely light and are attached to a piece of line known as a leader, which narrows from where it is attached to the line towards the fly end, called the tippet. The leader can vary in length between three to twelve feet. Sizes of flies vary greatly, size #2 being a larger fly and #22 being a rather small fly.

More about Fly Fishing Equipment

By: Angela Drummond

About the Author:

As strange as it may sound fly fishing is a awesome sport, hobby or as some may even call it an art. Like most sports there are guidelines to following when playing the game. With fly fishing the game is the fly casting and retrieving. Like most sports if you don’t follow the rules or guideline you suffer the consequences and with this sport the consequences are lost fish, tangles with your line etc.

Seeing somebody fly fish from the distance makes it look complicated and difficult, when in fact it isn’t. As I said above there are guidelines to follow when fly casting and if they are not followed you will not result in a cast or a good, accurate cast. Casting your fly rod will may not come to you over night. It can take several hours of practice before you get anywhere, but once you have mastered fly casting it will be with you forever.

With fly casting there is the simple pick up, and cast, but there are also other technique which allow you to fish better i.e be able to get a slow drift in fast running water, cast behind a rock, the double haul, this is all in you casting.

The best way to be able to learn to fly fish is by increasing your either by reading lots of information and watching video clips or getting some to teach you how to cast. Whatever way you learn it is up to you, but the quickest way is to get someone to teach you how to do.

By: Daniel Dohrman

About the Author:

Trout is an oily fish that is related to the salmon. It can be found in both fresh water and salt water. It is a rich source of protein and healthy fat. It is also large making it an ideal fish for game fishing. Trout are usually caught using a fishing line with a hook. To attract the fish, lures are used. There are two types of trout fishing lures, natural lures and artificial lures/ flies.

Natural lures include insects, crustaceans and bait fish. These are attached onto the hook and submerged in water. They are quite a fast and effective way to catch trout.

To get an effective natural lure you have to find the type of food the trout feed on in their habitats. These include the insects, crustaceans and small fish found in the trout’s environment. This can take up a lot of time. However, you can find these natural lures at the local trout fishing supplies shop.

The main disadvantage to these lures is that they are hard to come by. Also, they can be quite costly. In addition, there would be no point in feeding the trout when you intend to make a meal of it.

To take care of the disadvantage of using natural lures, artificial flies have been made. These are made by fastening a natural or synthetic material to a hook. The material can be hair, fur, feathers or any other item that can imitate the natural lure in terms of looks.

There are four types of trout fishing flies, the dry fly, the wet fly, nymphs and streamers. Dry flies and streamers float on the surface while wet flies and nymphs submerge.

Flies are designed in various colors and shapes and try as much as possible to imitate the insects, crustaceans or small fish the trout feed on. A fly is considered successful if it succeeds in attracting a trout enabling it to bite on the hook.

There are some flies which do not look like the natural lures. These are called attractive and are believed to arouse curiosity in the trout enabling it to take a bite.

Because of the many designs, color and patterns available it is necessary to select the right type for a particular fishing expedition. Some of the things you should consider is the location of the fishing. By identifying the types of insects and fish available in the particular location, you can easily select the fly that looks most similar to them.

Another thing you can consider is the type of fish you want to get. There is the rainbow trout which can be caught easily with any type of fly and the brownie which is easily caught using flies resembling bait fish.

The artificial lure has the advantage in that it can be used several times. This is unlike the natural lure which requires one lure for one trout. Also they are quite cheap as compared to the natural lures. This makes them the more popular of the two trout fishing lures.

By: Max Lara

About the Author:
