Check out my fanpage at: www.facebook.com . Follow Me On Twitter! twitter.com Thank you for subscribing! In episode six, I explore Northern California’s Oroville Lake to see if the lake has the true bass expectations as I original thought it has. I was right, I caught tons of bass over a one week period. Lake Oroville is one of California’s largest lakes. Lake Oroville is mostly used as a place to house boat, but the lake is filled with bass. Some of the bass were caught on a wacky rig with my new Trion Pflueger baitcast reel. Special thank you to Youtuber, Sawhorsepictures ( www.youtube.com ) for being the cinematographer, narrator, and editor for this episode.

If you have ever wanted to fish with artificial flies but don’t necessarily have an interest in going to the time and expense of learning to fly fish you need to be introduced to the world of fly fishing bubbles. Fly fishing bubbles are the best way to fish lightweight flies without having to use traditional fly fishing gear.

In this article I will outline how to use a casting bubble to fly fish. Fly fishing bubbles have been around for a long time, and if you aren’t familiar with them they can appear to be a traditional bobber. While a fly fishing bubble may look like a bobber, it is actually quite different. You see a fly fishing bubble is threaded onto your fishing line and “floats freely” on the line itself. The bubble is “stooped” by tying a swivel onto the end of your line. The bubble is then help underwater and “opened” to allow water into the bubble itself.

Adding water to the bubble gives you added weight for casting. In normal situations when you want to fish on the surface of the water the bubble is filled three quarters full of water. Fly fishing bubbles are most productive when fished in still water situations like lakes or ponds. Although this method of fishing flies can be done in rivers, it takes practice and shouldn’t be attempted by a fisherman with little or no experience. For the beginner, the use of fly fishing bubbles should be reserved for lakes and ponds.

Using a casting bubble to fly fish is actually quite easy. The rig is set up like this: Thread the bubble through your fishing line with the thinner end of the stopper pointing towards the end of your rod. Now tie on a swivel act as a “stopper” for the bubble itself. A tapered leader is now added to the opposite end of the swivel and a fly is tied to the end of the leader. At this point the stopper is depressed on the bubble itself while holding it underwater. Once the bubble is three quarters full, close the stopper.
.
This rig is now cast into the water and retrieved slowly. When it comes to fly fishing bubbles a slow retrieve is normally best, although varying the speed of the retrieve can be effective as well. Experimentation is the key to success when it comes to fishing flies in this manner. If you would like to fish with wet flies rather than dry flies, your bubble should be filled completely with water. This way the bubble will sink under the water after being cast out. A bubble, when full, will sink approximately six inches per second.

The bottom line is that you now know how to use a casting bubble to fly fish. Now it’s time to get out there and start experimenting. There is little doubt that with experience, this method of fishing will become one of your favorites. Artificial flies are effective for many species of fish from trout to large and small mouth bass and now as a traditional spin fisherman you know how you can fish effectively while using artificial flies.

By: Trevor Kugler

About the Author:

When it comes to trout fishing there are two styles of fishing that are employed min almost all cases. There is trout fishing with ultra light spin fishing gear and there is fly fishing. Both methods of fishing for trout are effective and one of the most important aspects of attempting to catch trout are the knots that are used for attaching tackle to your line and/or tying two lengths of line together. In this article I will outline and discuss three of the best fishing knots for trout fishing so that they can be added to your “memory bank” for the next time that you are out on the water fishing for these beautiful fish.

Whether you are an ultralight spin fisherman or a fly fisherman, you need to know how to tie these fishing knots when you are out on the water attempting to catch trout. I will provide some tips as to what each of the following knots can be used for as well as what the knot is called, but there is little doubt that these knots are three of the best knots when attempting to catch trout.

The Dropper Loop – This knot makes a loop in the middle of your line. There are applications when fly fishing where the Dropper loop comes in handy, and also when attempting to catch fish with ultra light gear and a bottom rig. The dropper loop is the perfect knot to know for making a loop in the middle of line no matter what the fishing application may be. The Uni Knot – This is a reliable terminal tackle fishing knot. This method of attachment can be used by both fly and spin fishermen. Some say this knot is as easy to tie as fishing knots get, and it could easily become your “go to” fishing knot when you are out on the water fishing for trout. The uni knot is perfect for tying on any piece of terminal tackle onto your line. It is a strong and reliable way to attach lures, flies, hooks, or swivels to your line or leader. The Surgeon’s Knot – This knot is a great way of attaching two pieces of line together. This obviously comes in handy for fly fishermen as they attach their leader to their fly line, but for spin fishermen as well when they need to tie two pieces of line together. This is a strong and “easy to tie” knot for both of these trout fishing scenarios.

Now, are these the only knots that need to be known when fishing for trout? Who knows? Manners of attaching fishing line together and attaching terminal tackle, lures, or flies to fishing line are largely up to personal preference and style, but these three knots are all great ways to accomplish these tasks and should be a part of any serious trout fisherman’s arsenal.

By: Trevor Kugler

About the Author:

The New Year is young and with the snow flying here in Ontario who is thinking far ahead into the new 09 Bass season? I, for one, am that crazy! I can’t help it. As a matter of fact, I know I have exactly 186 sleeps before the opening day here in Ontario. Some of you may think that’s a long time, but it’s just around the corner. Before you know it, we will be in our boats and on shore fishing for Bass cherishing the great moments, and that is what keeps us going until the next year!

In Ontario an outdoorsman is truly blessed with the ‘hunt on’ in the fall and winter, the ‘fish on’ in the winter and spring and then ‘Bass on’ in the summer and autumn! As you can see, there is never a dull moment for Ontario outdoor enthusiasts like me. I am always ready for each season and what it brings. I have my entire Bass gear ready to go including the new baits and tackle for the 09 season. There are also many more to come and through these next few months I will be gathering them for experimentation out in the field this season. And, as usual, the staff here at Pro Bass Fishing.ca will be bringing you our findings. That’s what we do best!

Now for the time being let’s ask ourselves….Did I have success this past season? And if so, can I do better? Am I using my combos and baits to their full potential? Maybe you are like me and you want to expand your methods and experiment with different combos and baits. Maybe it’s time to specialize. By this I mean specialize in certain techniques or rigs that you feel you have the knack for. Something that comes naturally to you like say, pitching or casting or even a certain rig like a jig and trailer or Carolina rigging. Something you are comfortable using and have confidence in including a certain combo is all a part of our accumulated go-to rigs combos and baits. The method, rig, and combo are now specialized for you alone. It is custom made by you for you to bring success! Eventually you will have quite a few in your arsenal which will make you a better Bass angler. When the fishing method and scenario sync they get etched into our minds which then creates good Bass sense for the future. It is basically called experience. The more time we spend on the water the better we become.

For now let’s use this off time to ponder on our efforts this past season and think of what we can change for the new season. You can never be too good of an angler, so sit and think of what you can do better! It is part of evolving into a good smart Bass angler that thinks ahead and eventually becomes a seasoned Bass angler. We never stop learning; even seasoned anglers know this and know it well! Be prepared for any Bass fishing circumstance and deal with it. Use your now known and proven tactics from past that you remember and now specialize in and you will be successful!

Well there are now 185.5 sleeps left before Ontario’s 09 Bass season. There is a lot of planning to do and Bass tackle to organize. I know it’s early, but I’m ready! I’m always ready!

By: Nic Di Gravio

About the Author:

At this time of year when the rivers and steams become high and muddy, many anglers are reserved to catching trout in lakes. Catching trout in a lake means that you will be fishing for stocked trout much of the time, and stocked trout mean that they shouldn’t be terribly difficult to catch. Think about it, if a bear is born and raised in captivity, how much of a mean streak to you think said bear will have? Not much and I feel the same way about trout raised in captivity. Sure they’re fun to catch in a pinch, but given the choice, I would much rather catch native trout who have grown as nature intended, and not in a glorified aquarium.

That being said, catching trout in a lake can be quite productive and fun when done properly. How is it done properly? The first thing to do is begin using a set of gang hooks. Obviously anglers know about hooks, but gang hooks are a bit different. You see, gang hooks are simply two small hooks tied in tandem. For trout fishing I suggest size 8 or 10 gang hooks. Gang hooks allow the angler to present a worm in a completely natural manner, and when it comes to catching trout in a lake allows the angler to present Powerbait in a very effective manner.

Although many different baits can be employed while attempting to catch a trout in a lake such as cheese, corn, and marshmallows, the most effective bait that I’ve found is Powerbait or similar synthetic baits. When a set of gang hooks is employed, no the angler can present twice as much bait, thus doubling their chances of a hook up! This is obviously quite an advantage.

It’s quite simple to set up a gang hook rig. Simply take the end of your line and slip an egg sinker onto it (1/4 should work if it’s not too windy). Now tie a small barrel swivel onto your line that will act as a “stopper” for the egg sinker. If the egg sinker can slip over the barrel swivel, attach a small split shot to act as a “stopper”. Now tie a set of pre-tied gang hooks onto the other end of the barrel swivel (You can make your gang hooks yourself or buy them, it’s up to you). Now add your Powerbait or similar synthetic bait to each of the hooks on the set of gang hooks. I like to use just enough bait to completely cover each hook. This is your gang hook still fishing rig. Simply cast this out and let it sink to the bottom. Then slowly reel in any slack line, and wait.

I usually wait for at least 30 minutes before checking my bait if I haven’t received any bites. After an hour, I’ll usually re-bait, sometimes with a different color. Sometimes something as crazy as the color of your Powerbait can make a difference? You can never tell with these stocked trout. I think they are born without brains in some cases. Who knows what the scientists do to breed these finless wonders? The point is that sometimes the color of the Powerbait makes a difference, and experimentation is the only way to find out which will work best on a given day. At the end of the day, this technique will enable you to catch trout in a lake, especially if stocked trout live in that lake.

By: Trevor Kugler

About the Author:

Kayak fished Lake Anna, VA on Jan 10, 2010. I chased birds for stripers. I did not catch any by casting and jigging lures while chasing birds for 2 hours. I caught blue back herrings on #8 Sabiki rig to use as live baits on circle hooks. I finally caught released a large mouth bass and a striper on live herrings. The wind was at 15-18MPH most of time. It wasn’t ideal day for kayak fishing.
