If you’ve decided to take up fishing, and don’t really know where to start, and are too scared to go into a fishing shop because you think that you’ll be patronised, or sold the wrong fishing tackle, why not know a few things before you start? If you’re an experienced angler, then you might also want to know exactly what you need your rod to do. This will help you to decide what you do and don’t want or need, and can make choosing the right rod much easier, as you won’t be sidetracked, and won’t be overwhelmed with fishing jargon.

1. If you know what you are fishing, then you can decide what sort of rod you need. Different sorts of rods are often used for catching trout and salmon, and you might want a rod for going see fishing, or perhaps just to use as a holiday rod.

2. By working out how much use your rod will get, you can determine how much you will use it, and so much you want to spend in order to get something appropriate. You will probably not want to spend a lot of money on a holiday rod, but will want to make sure that your everyday rod is as good as you can afford.

3. The places where you will be fishing can help you to decide what sort of rod you want. If you’re fishing at sea you’ll be catching big fish, and want a strong rod. If you’re sitting by the side of a lake just waiting for the fish to bite, you’ll not mind if your rod isn’t the lightest.

4. The size of rod can make a huge difference as to its suitability. You might be fishing in a river, with overhanging trees, which means that a small rod will be most effective. Alternatively, you might be fishing a huge lake, and want a longer rod.

5. The weight of a rod can also make a difference. A lightweight rod will be suitable if you’re going to be stood in a fast moving river all day, and have to keep tight hold of your rod, whereas if you’re sat on the edge of a lake, it won’t matter if your fishing rod isn’t the lightest model available.

6. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time fishing, then you’ll want to make sure that your rod is still going to be as comfortable at the end of a cold wet day, as at the beginning of the day.

7. You might already have a couple of brands in mind, or have used a few rods already, and know what features are important to you. If not, make sure that you try lots of different rods, and choose the one that feels the most comfortable and right for you.

8. You’ll want to make sure that any rod you use is easy to use, even when you’re cold and wet. If you’re not sure what you should be looking for, and the features you need, why not ask friends or on a fishing forum?

9. If you’re an experienced angler, you may want to know whether your new rod is going to be compatible with your other fishing tackle. Will you need new reels or lines if you’re going to be catching different sorts of fish?

10. Try your rods in store, and then buy online if you want to save money. However, there is definitely something to be said for having a knowledgeable fishing shop. Why not buy online from an experienced fishing shopping shop that will be able to give you all the advice and information you need?

Now you know more about buying fishing rods, what’s stopping you from getting a new rod and going fishing again?

By: M James

If you’ve decided to take up fishing, then you might already know exactly what you need, or alternatively, you might not know where to start.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. You’ll need a fishing rod, but this doesn’t have to be the most expensive, or the most hi-tech. You’ll want your fishing rod to be comfortable so that you can hold it all day, and be easy to use.

2. Fly Fishing Reels are also important, and you’ll want to make sure that you have the right one for the sort of fishing that you’ll be doing. You might one with ha sturdy handle for salmon fishing, or that allows you to strip the line easily if you’re fishing for trout.

3. Your fishing lines are important, and you’ll want to make sure that the ones you are using are suitable for the fish you’re catching. You’ll need stronger lines for bigger and heavier fish, as you don’t want the line to break.

4. Waders are not essential for many anglers, however, if you intend to be fishing stood in a river, then you’ll want to stay dry. Waders are available in different styles, and some offer additional insulation and padding, so that you can stay warm whilst fishing.

5. You’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of bait too. You might be using flies, or fly tying and creating your own bait. You’ll soon learn which flies are the most successful.

6. You’ll need a bait box of some sort, so that you can carry all the bait you need with you easily. You’ll want one with plenty of compartments so that it’s easy to which bait you need.

7. Although you don’t need specialised clothing to go fishing. You’ll want to make sure that you have a warm jacket, with plenty of pockets so that you can stay warm all day. You might want your jacket to be waterproof or windproof to give you additional protection.

8. As well as keeping your body warm and dry, you’ll want to you’re your feet warm and dry too. You’ll want either a pair of Wellingtons or decent boots. You’ll need plenty of grip for walking on wet and muddy surfaces, and plenty of ankle support in case you slip.

9. A fishing bag is the best way to store your fishing tackle, so that you have everything you need with you. You won’t lose anything important, or leave anything behind when you go fishing.

10. You’ll also need floatants and sinkants, to either float your bait, or float it. Some fish are surface feeder, so you’ll need your bait to look and act realistically.

Now you know what you need, you’ll be able to get all the fishing tackle you need.

By: M James

About the Author:

When you need all around performance for Sockeye, Silvers or Kings, whether you’re fishing from the bank or your boat, the Alaska Medium Drifter is the easy choice. Soft in the tip and power where it counts, makes casting easy and holding big fish a breeze. Longer rods are quickly gaining popularity because of the line control and casting ability they offer the angler. With this in mind, we’ve added a 10′ version of our very popular Alaska Medium Drifter. Great egg rod and loves to pull big plugs in heavy current. It’s also one of our first choices as a bobber rod anywhere salmon live. When you need a little more horsepower, the Alaska Heavy Drifter is your choice of rod. This 9′ rod is rated for 15-40 lbs and will bring the toughest kings to boat in short order. For those of you who love pulling big plugs or dragging eggs in heavy current, this rod will be your workhorse. This rod doubles as an excellent heavy mooching rod and is perfect for keeper Sturgeon in the bays. The Alaska King Drifter is your choice when you want the biggest, toughest, fish fighting tool on the river. At 9′ long and rated from 20-50lbs, I dare you to find a king that can’t be beat with this rod. Strong tip section that still casts like a dream.

Fishing, especially fly fishing, gets into your blood, doesn’t it? Your worthy opponents, trout and salmon, have an excellent chance of winning the fight if you’re not at the top of your game. For that reason, it’s important to have the best fly fishing tackle you can afford. Like many other anglers, I keep my eye on the new gear that comes out. Here’s some information about a great reel from Hardys, the Uniqua 3.

About the Hardy Uniqua 3 Fly Fishing Reel

For about £135.00 (on special offer), you’ll get a great entrée into the line of superb tackle made by Hardy. One of the aspects of Hardy that I particularly appreciate is that their products and designs are based on the unbeatable combination of technology and experience. If you’re looking for a fly reel that’s exceptionally strong yet light, this Hardy model is worth a serious look. I’ve found it to have a sensitive, offset drag system that’s quick and easy to adjust by way of a Rulon™ disk. Rulon™, by the way, is a type of highly durable plastic that is known for its low coefficient of friction. It’s also quite resistant to abrasion, is chemically inert and performs well in a wide range of temperatures.

Features of the Hardy Uniqua 3 Fly Reel

The Uniqua 3 reel features a cageless design that allows “palming” for superior fish control. It also has a distinctive click check, complete with that familiar and exciting sound you’ll hear when a fish strikes the lure and runs with the line. The drag system is exceptionally sensitive, as well. I’ve found the offset drag to be easy to adjust and, above all, reliable. If you’re looking for versatility in your fishing reel, you should know that the Uniqua 3 can be used in fresh or saltwater. Would you expect any less from Hardy’s?

More About the Hardy Uniqua 3 Fly Reel

I like to have a lot of backing on my reel, and the Uniqua 3 has room for more than enough. The aluminium casting keeps the weight low and has a 3 1/2″ diameter. It weighs a bit over 6 1/4 ounces and will hold 6 and 7 weight fly lines with plenty of backing. The Uniqua 3 is made from a high quality, durable alloy and not from cheap, machine stamped components. When I’m out for small salmon, large rainbows and stripers, I always have this reel in my tackle box.

About Hardys

Hardy is committed to using the latest designs and technology to create a superior line of fishing tackle products. When reading about the company, I learned that it uses custom designed static and dynamic test equipment to ensure that all products meet high quality standards for use in even the most challenging and rigorous angling venues and weather conditions.

For my money, the Hardy Uniqua 3 fly reel is an excellent and affordable piece of fly fishing tackle. Highly recommended!

By: Tommy Lee Jones

About the Author:

With fly fishing it’s a whole new world of fishing things you need to know. There are several pieces of equipment used in fly fishing. This article will discuss one of its most fundamental equipments which is the fly rod. This is where the fly line is attached.

The fly rod comes in several sizes. Its length typically ranges from as short as 6 ft to as long as 13 ft. Aside from the length, fly fishing rods are measured by their weight. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the value of the weight, the smaller the fish it can catch. For example, a fly rod of 0wt (zero weight) is enough to catch a small trout. For bigger types of fish such as a salmon, a fly rod of a heavier weight is used.

A fly rods weight is also important in determining the weight of the fly line that can be used with it. So a rod of 10wt requires a #10 line and could not use a line of a different size. There are rods which can accommodate a variety of weights but they tend to compromise performance for flexibility.

Bamboo is the traditional material used as a fly rod. It is prized by fly fishing enthusiasts for its surprising strength in typical conditions. It can be pricey though, which is why others choose rods made of alternative materials such as fiberglass and graphite. The two are chosen for their durability (they are not prone to rusting) and performance (they are lighter compared to other materials).

By: Larry H Dennis

About the Author:

I love fishing and hope anyone who reads my article will enjoy it. I started fishing when I was about nine years old. I was given my first fishing pole at that time from my grandfather. It was a beautiful split bamboo fly rod that had been hand wrapped by my grandfather. He taught me the art of fishing in the rivers of southern Utah. He taught me the basics first and then taught me how to fly fish. each time he took me I couldn’t wait for him to take me again. We grew very close as we went fishing time after time. I grew up with him patiently teaching me through the years. Those were the good old days. He’s gone now and I know if there are rivers in heaven with trout in them he’ll be fishing them . Funny how time fly’s by. I’m a grandfather now and I go fishing with my grandchildren now. Now I see the joy he got from teaching me how to fish.

How to set up a 3oz bobber system for fishing in big deep boily holes with Matthew Clark. Chinook like to suspend in these types of holes at the 10 to 18 foot level. Drift rigs will only fall through the fish but this system will carry the bait right to their faces. I have caught many hundreds of spring and fall chinook salmon over the last 16 years fishing this way and now its your turn to learn how to do it.

The fine taste of the King Salmon, fresh from today’s catch is like no other fish. All the fishermen onboard know and the action gets a little frantic when it is time to land the beautiful fish. The waters off the coast of Northern California have been rich in the Salmon that gourmets love and that supplies valuable nutrition for the body. As a fished is hooked shouts of “fish on” are heard and the chaos of landing it often involve the skipper, mate and other fishermen. With more than one fish online at a time the action is fast and furious. When the limit of 2 fish per person the boat heads back to the harbor early “limited out” and full of happy people. The coast is beautiful and the sea mercifully and unusually calm.
