We where all ready for our bass fishing trip. We loaded up the tackle box with are favorite top water jigs, spoons, shiners, real bait, power bait etc. etc. Nothing was left out for are fishing adventure down the bayou to catch some nice large-mouth bass. Then the three children started to plead and beg to load up there bow fishing bows into the fishing boat the night before. What dad can say no to their own children when it comes to the great outdoors and wanting to shoot there bows to polish up on the archery skills they have learned thus far. Let me set the story strait. The wife (aka the misses) of the house doesn’t bow fish. So are day was planned for a great bass fishing adventure and everyone was suppose to fish with there rod and reels.

We loaded up the boat with the fishing poles and yes, the bow fishing gear was hidden below in the compartment so the woman of the house wouldn’t see them. I didn’t want to ruin her day or the kids. That way I can have my cake and eat it too while fishing. The morning started off pretty well for a family fishing trip. With are fishing boat already overloaded with gear. It gets a little smaller with five people trying to fish from a sixteen foot Jon boat. We made it to are favorite fishing hole by first light and realized the challenges ahead of us within moments. Are favorite bass fishing spot was over grown with grass and lilies. Now usually, this makes for a great combination of bass near the tree line where it’s shaded but we where so overwhelmed by the over growth that it made it very difficult for the kids to cast and jig back to the boat. Almost every cast was either fouled up or caught in the grass. By late morning we had a half a dozen bass in the boat.

Now if your familiar with Louisiana and southern humidity you can understand why the kids wanted there bow fishing bows. The water is to dangerous to take a quick dip to cool down in with all of the snakes and alligators in the water. They started the usual complaining and wanted to get the boat moving to cool down. With the fish not biting as well in the heat the of the day the alligator gar started to splash around. My wife wasn’t to happy at the moment. Bass fish generally aren’t around when the gar fish are active. Six bass around 2 to 3lbs or was it 4 to 5lbs. Anyway we had caught enough for dinner and the misses was getting the urge to get moving towards the dock. Lunch was approaching plus we where so hot and miserable with the complaining kids. The misses agreed to bow fishing are way back to the dock.

The three kids lit up with grins on there faces with moms suggestion to hunt the way back. The kids wet there bow fishing lines to prevent any line miss happenings and we where on the hunt. The kids practice on a rag target all the time at the house but, it is not the same thing shooting at a moving target or even off of a moving platform. The kids landed a couple of smaller alligator gar and a few channel cat fish. Everyone was happy with there day spent outside fishing. Now when I say, “never take your bow fishing bow”. What I really mean is, “have your bow fishing bows in your boat at all times”. You never know when the fish stop biting and you can still land a prehistoric monster or gar. Load up your freezer with meat. Now there not the best fish to eat but the Cajuns have a nice gar fish ball recipe to make the fish more palatable. We finished are evening with some blackened bass for supper. We cooked are meal outside with are camping stove and enjoyed are meal outdoors with a nice sunset. The fruits of are adventure never tasted so sweet.

By: Sean S.

About the Author:

Enjoy fishing for those largemouth bass? Here are some largemouth bass fishing tips that should come in handy the next time you are ready to do a little angling.

(1) Worms or tubes bought in bulk could get smelly, even outside of the bag they’re stored in. You should seal these worms in smaller vacuum sealer bags like those you purchase for food storage. Keeps the largemouth bass bait airtight and fresh, so they can be stored anywhere for any length of time.

(2) Fish seem to gain leverage with hard baits such as top waters, jerk baits or crank baits and can easily throw them. One solution to this is to add a split ring, putting it between the ring that is already there and the hook. This reduces the fish’s leverage, which puts a greater number of fish in the live well.

(3) Begin a fishing excursion before you ever reach the water. Largemouth fishing tips include formulating a plan. After executing the plan for a few hours, decide how it’s working and if it’s not go to plan “B”.

(4) Are those largemouths not cooperating? Switch to a bait you have confidence in.

(5) Change fishing spots, even if you have a favorite, be sure to try new spots often.

(6) You should also be willing to study a lake map and consider the season and current weather conditions even if you are fishing on a very familiar lake. You may have missed a great fishing spot.

(7) Use a personal computer to discern lake levels, weather forecasts, and wind and wave conditions.

(8) Be willing to change your game plan. Pay attention to your instincts.

(9) Don’t get ahead of yourself and set the hook as soon as you see the strike. You need to feel the fish.

(10) When the largemouth short strikes behind top water bait and you don’t connect you should not give up. Cast a different bait very quickly.

(11) If you have been using larger lures and you have experienced only a few nonproductive bites it may be time to try something smaller.

(12) Remember to take into consideration the root system when fishing a stump. The root systems may hold more fish than the main part of the stump.

Now that you have these largemouth bass fishing tips, head for the water and bring in a big one.

By: Tim Lee

About the Author:

Without a doubt nothing beats the excitement of watching a large striped bass crush a top-water plug at the Cape Cod Canal. However when it comes to consistently catching large striped bass from the “Big Ditch,” concentrating on working the bottom of the land cut can pay off in a big way.

However one can not expect to just toss a jig anywhere in the canal and be rewarded with success. This slim ribbon of fish filled water has its hot spots and dead zones like any other fishing area along the striper coast. Being able to find the dramatic drop-offs, underwater humps, rocky ledges and relentless rips is key to consistently taking big bass off the bottom.

Striped bass flock to areas of structure like bees to honey. Often times the fish will position themselves deep in a hole, or right behind a rock ledge. The structure breaks up the swift current, basically in the same way a building blocks a stiff breeze.

Traditional striper theory states that cow stripers will use current blocking pieces of structure to gain a competitive advantage on their prey. The strong Cape Cod Canal current pushes all sorts of bait fish and prey items downstream. Crafty striped bass will take position behind a piece of structure, and then ambush prey as it tumbles in the current.

What this means for the angler is that being able to offer a well placed jig right around, or better yet, directly in these pieces of structure will increase your catch rate. Often times jigs that bounce just a few yards too far from these hot spots are completely ignored by the bass.

So how do we go about locating these prime jigging spots in the first place?

One of the easiest ways to find areas worth jigging is to pay close attention to differences in the surface water of the canal. Fish holding pieces of structure will often create disturbances in the natural flow of the current. More than likely clues to the location of the fishy structure shows itself as a wake, ripple, whirlpool etc. on the surface of the canal.

Walking the banks of the canal, or better yet riding your bike along the service road, and keeping a close eye out for differences on the canal’s surface is a good way to at least get an idea of where to fish.

Standing waves are arguably the most tell-tale sign of an underwater hump or gulley. If you find an area with standing waves, the actual fish holding structure will be located slightly up current of the waves. This holds true regarding any sort of disturbance on the surface-the fishy structure will always be slightly up current.

It is now time to zone in on the exact location of the structure. This can be done by fan casting an area with a jig or bank sinker. Be sure to use a jig or sinker heavy enough to reach bottom in the swift current. I typically start with 4 ounces and go heavier or lighter depending on current conditions.

Cast up current and keep a close count on the number of seconds it takes the jig to reach bottom. Obviously the shallower the water, the quicker the jig will reach bottom-the deeper the water, the longer.

For example, one fantastic canal jigging spot that I frequent each May and June features a tall prominent peak followed by a deep, steep hole. It takes my jig 7 seconds to hit bottom on top of the peak. However when cast directly into the deep hole, it takes my jig 20 seconds to reach bottom. Due to the difference in the amount of time it takes my jig to reach bottom, I know that I am successfully presenting my offering smack dab in the middle of the strike zone.

Fan casting an area will be easiest during the last part of the west tide, slack tide, and the beginning of the east.

The Cape Cod Canal is littered with fantastic jigging spots. However it can take considerable time and effort to locate the best areas.

Yet if consistently pulling big bass from the canal’s bottom is important to you, then the time spent uncovering these prime jigging spots will be well worth the time and energy required to locate them.

By: Ryan John Collins

About the Author:

Bluegill really aren’t that fussy when it comes to flies, however, there are some flies that they just can’t refuse. One of these is the inch worm, especially in early spring. If you see these green devils dropping out of the trees on your home water, get out what some call the green weenie and whip it in the water. When fishing with inch worm imitations, you can even plop them on and off the surface, right on top of bluegill to get them really worked up, because real inch worms hop on and off the water when they are blowing around in the wind on their silk. Oh yeah, when it is extremely windy, and there are moths, inch worms, and ants, getting blown all over god’s green earth, get on the water and get ready for top water heaven with flies.

Bluegill, especially, will throw caution to the wind when there is windy chop on the water and insects blowing in like mad. Any ant imitation will do well, but don’t go too small, because bluegill really have a strong **** off the surface, and they will take a size 26 ant right into the back of their throat. Keep the sizes around 18 for the ants, depending on how big the gills are that you’re catching.

Micro streamers, small muddlers minnows, and micky finns work very well for bluegill in sizes 10,12,14, and 16. Woolly buggers in the same sizes always get bluegill worked up. In deeper waters use some sinking line to get down to the bigger fish laying just off a shallow flat.

Dry fly fishing for bluegills is often quite amazing, as there really needs to be no hatch at all for bluegills to attack something on the surface. Try a Royal coachman as a generic dry in sizes 12,14, and 16. If there are white moths in your area, a light cahill will do the trick in a size 12 or 14. Chernobol ants, crickets, and grasshoppers work well too, but stay with the smaller sizes because sometimes these flies are over tied with way too much material: some people like to make them like an abrams tank and the bluegills have quite a time trying to get their jaws around it.

By: Scott R

About the Author:
