Whether it’s walking the rivers of Yellowstone park or casting from the coasts of Washington, fly fishing has long been one of the most popular activities for avid outdoorsman and leisurely weekend fisherman alike. With the cost of everything on the rise, those who choose to spend their days off in a pairs of waders, may be looking for affordable tackle and supplies. Or perhaps there is a dream to open a fly fishing shop along the Missouri river at the base of Montana’s tallest mountains. Whatever the motivation may be, here are some leads on where to find quality equipment at wholesale fly fishing prices:

Centralflies dot com offers a wide variety of the most popular flies used all across the country. The company prides itself on delivering a high quality product at a low price. With most of their patterns made of deer or rabbit hair, the flies are said to have a more natural appeal. The flies are tied in Thailand, and made of materials from America and Europe. Centralflies dot com carries wet flies, dry flies, nymphs, streamers, woollies, muddlers, salt water flies, and flies specialized for salmon, pike, and bass.

At fliesdirect dot com, which is a United States based company, a catalog of the 6 most common types of flies with over 1400 patterns is available. The high quality flies come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee and all orders can be tracked online. In addition to the catalog, fliesdirect dot com offers a bidding program on the manufacture of special orders. The service is free, and works well when doing preliminary pricing for your wholesale fly fishing business. This bidding program has the potential to give you the exact flies you want at price considerably lower than purchasing the separately.

More than just flies are available from percys flies dot com. The company has been doing business since 1888, making them one of the most stable names in world of wholesale fly fishing supplies. In addition to the large selection of flies, customers can find all the gear they may need for even their first fly fishing trip. They carries rods, reels, and combos, an extensive line of clothing and specialty gear, and offers to handle your particular tying orders.

A web site that is aimed more toward the fisherman rather than the bait shop is gofishin dot com. To compliment their line of fly fishing gear, the online catalog also contains items for hunting, camping, sports, and a line of gifts for your fellow outdoorsman.

By: Ian Pennington

About the Author:

Fly fishing is catching fish with style. It is done in both salt and fresh waters. This type of fishing is not like traditional fishing that uses live baits like worms or insects. This type of game sport is done with lures designed to imitate insects or crustaceans and other small creatures that would seem appetizing for the fish. The lures come in different colors shapes and sizes either made to float, sink, spin or combinations.

There are lures or flies that are sold in the market but some fishermen, including me, prefer making our own lures. For us, the fun begins not at our favorite game spot, but at the time we conceive an idea on how we want to make lures look like. The fly itself is usually made up of a trailer, skirt and the blade. I would not recommend using a trailer that would be too big for the skirt.

Using a trailer in clear water would give out more shine from the lure and that would lessen the illusion of real live bait. The skirt is made up of threads wound up around the blade to pose as the body and the wings, if there are, of the lure. It would be best to imitate natural colors to be more realistic in clear waters but in muddy waters, I tend to use brighter and much more vibrant colors. I also use a trailer a tad bigger in muddy waters. The blade is, well, the hook. In making lures, some fishermen prefer a specific type of hook over the other. I tend to experiment using two or more types of blades in my lures.

There are a lot of types of flies; some intended to float; some to sink; some to spin under water; some to spin on the surface called a buzzer. And even more on styles on making these lures in fly fishing books.

Another important tool is the rod. It is not like the regular rods. The rods are usually longer, stronger and lighter. Fly rods for salt water are usually 14 feet in length and ten feet for fresh water. This is because of the technique needed to preserve the illusion that we are using live bait.

To preserve this illusion, a technique called bait casting is done. Casting for regular fishing is different from this type. In fly fishing, the fisherman needs to cast the lure and make it touch the surface of the water like an insect would. The fly is called an imitator, so it should imitate nature.

Another tool that would serve the fly fisher very nicely is the reel. Traditional fishing reels tend to break under the wear and tear of fly fishing. There are many reels to choose from in the market. These are bait casting reels, so called because they serve best the purpose of bait casting and reeling in.

There are many casting styles in fly fishing and it would only be perfected by practice. These casting techniques could be learned from fly fishing books. This is a really a beautiful sport that requires patience, grace and a lot of imagination for making the lures a lot you can learn from fly fishing books among others. Remember: the best equipment only perform as good as the one who wields them. So learn more techniques and practice and see you on the water.

By: Juan Skyzinski

About the Author:

Fly fishing is a sport that many people enjoy doing. It takes years to perfect but only minutes to love. One of the tricky parts of fly fishing is knowing which type of fly to use for a particular situation or type of fish.

Types of flies in fly fishing are also known as patterns. What exactly is being fished for and under what conditions determines the type of fly that is used. There are many different patterns that are used in fly fishing. They can be broken down into five main categories: wet fly, dry fly, streamer fly, nymph, and terrestrial.

Wet Fly

As the name implies, wet flies are a type of fly that resembles insects that are under the water. This includes dead insects and insects that are coming up and emerging from the water. This type of fly can also be made to look like bigger water creatures such as leeches or crawfish.

Dry Fly

Just as with the wet fly, the dry fly’s name also gives away what it is imitating. Therefore a dry fly is meant to look like an insect that stays on top of the water. While fishing with a dry fly it is usually necessary to dry the fly several times.

Streamer

A streamer is a type of wet fly but it is meant to look like an injured baitfish. Streamers are larger than the other types of flies. They are used to catch larger fish that are predatory.

Nymph

A nymph fly is another type of wet fly. It is supposed to look like an insect that is coming out of it’s cocoon or it’s larval state. A majority of fish like to eat insects in this state.

Terrestrial

Terrestrial flies can be used as wet or dry flies. They are made to look like larger insects that mistakenly jump into the water and drown. These types of flies can either be made to look like an insect trying desperately to free itself from the water or as an insect that has already died and is simply sinking into the water without movement.

In fly fishing there are many different types of flies. While each type of fly has it’s own type of fish it is supposed to catch, many anglers will use any type of fly that they think will work on the fish at a certain time. The main types of flies are wet flies, dry flies, streamer, nymph, and terrestrial.

By: Marilyn Roberts

About the Author:

Fly-fishing has gained a great popularity over the years as a relaxing sport. The thrill of luring the fish, catching it and having it for lunch or dinner or simply the soothing sounds of running water in a stream have made fly fishing an experience to remember, for the young and the old alike. The fly-fishing experience is complete only if you have the right kind of fishing equipment.

The most important fly-fishing gear is the fishing rod. Fly fishing rods were originally made from flexible but sturdy wood. Later on, bamboo rods were introduced and these became the standard fly-fishing equipment. Bamboo was treated and reinforced to make the best quality fly fishing rods. Presently, due to advanced technology, fly-fishing rods are manufactured from carbon fiber or fiberglass. The fly fishing rod is similar to a normal fishing rod, only it is a little heavier. The weight factor gives a clean and smooth cast to the fishing pole. The smoothness of the cast can vary from pole to pole. A sturdy and heavy fishing pole is an essential part of fly-fishing equipment.

The reels used in fly-fishing are bigger and heavier in comparison to the normal fishing reel. They have a distinctive design and are much more durable compared to the normal fishing poles. Fly fishing rods and reels work together and one must consider their compatibility to each other at the time of purchase. They have to work smoothly together. Finding the suitable reel for the fly fishing rod is of utmost importance.

The third component of the fly-fishing equipment is the replicated fly. Flies are designed to lure the fish and specific types of flies are used to lure a particular species of fish. Hence, the most important aspect of fly-fishing is to consider what type of fish you want to catch. Choosing the right kind of fly is the most important aspect of fly-fishing equipment. The other important item in the fly-fishing attire is a good set of rubber waders that will keep you warm and dry in the cold waters.

Purchasing the right type of fly-fishing equipment is a challenge. However, it adds to the fly-fishing experience and therefore worth the extra effort it takes to procure the best of fly-fishing equipment. With a little practice and the right type of fishing gear, fly-fishing can be a very relaxing and enjoyable sport.

By: Abhishek Agarwal

OK. So you have heard about fly fishing and decided you want to have a go at it. But you realized you don’t know the first thing about it! Here is a basic beginner fly fishing lesson, including equipment selection, what flies to use and how to cast..

Equipment for the beginner in fly fishing:

If you are new to the sport, the best way to go would be to purchase a packaged deal that includes reels, lines and rods. You can rest in the knowledge that everything will be matched and balanced properly. Also, it’ll work out a lot cheaper than buying everything individually. Packages can be bought from the internet or from retail tackle shops.

The leader and tippet connect the fly to the end of your line. They are usually made of monofilament or fluorocarbon, which are near-transparent in the water. This means that the fly appears to the fish to be unattached to anything. Fluorocarbon is the newer material, and is much better than monofilament. The leader is around eight or nine feet long, and tapered. The tippet attaches to the end of the leader so that you don’t end up cutting off the leader when you are changing flies.

Waders and wading boots are a must for protection against the weather, the wet, and against slipping on river stones. Fishing vests are very handy for carrying all the bits and pieces you’ll be taking on your day out fishing. Make sure there’s plenty of pockets of all sizes, and that the vest has good ventilation if you’re going to be out in warm weather.

Choosing flies:

If you are new to fly fishing, then being confronted by the thousands of different types of flies available may be a bit overwhelming. If you take a visit to your local fly shop or a sporting goods store, they will be able to recommend the best fly patterns to use in your area. Don’t be shy – ask around to see what patterns are working best that season.

Casting:

Here are some pointers to give you an idea of what is involved in casting. To really get a feel for it, however, it is advisable to get lessons with an experienced instructor. Apart from that, practice! Take the hook off the fly and practice, be it in your backyard, a local park, or out on the water.

Overhead casting is the basic fly cast. You lift your line up off the water in front of you, bring it over your head and behind you, then cast if forward again. It takes practice and skill to land the fly in the place you want it.

The roll cast is simple and highly effective. It is especially useful in windy conditions or when there are a lot of obstructions that prevent you using the overhead cast. Your line should be tight in the water, then you lift the rod vertically up to a point just behind your ear and do a forward cast. This makes the line do a loop and land in the place you point your rod to.

With this information you should now be able to make informed decisions about the equipment you need, how to find out what flies to use and a good under standing on a couple of basic casts.

By: Duncan Mcleod

About the Author:
